The Helikon-Tex US Level 1 Long Johns are a full-length base layer worn next to the skin as the first component of a three-layer system. Made entirely from polyester at a weight of 160 g, they are designed for hunters, shooters and operators who spend hours stationary or on the move in cold conditions, where a base layer that does not retain moisture makes the difference between comfort and hypothermia.

100% polyester does not absorb water the way cotton does: it wicks perspiration away from the skin by capillary action, keeping the skin drier during physical effort and reducing evaporative cooling during rest phases. This matters most in hunting, where repeated cycles of active stalking and motionless waiting are the norm.

The closure is zip-free, built from a folded fabric panel that eliminates pressure points and chafing in the groin area when worn under tactical or hiking trousers with a belt. The trade-off is that quick access takes a few extra seconds compared to a button-fly design, but in return the fit is more even and there are no metal components that can become uncomfortable in low temperatures. Flat or minimised seams complete the comfort profile during extended wear under a mid layer.

Key points

  • Polyester fabric moves moisture away from the skin, reducing the risk of chilling during rest phases after physical effort.
  • The modest weight of 160 g keeps the layering system light and leaves room for a more structured mid layer.
  • The zip-free closure eliminates pressure points and metal against the skin, a clear advantage in severe cold.
  • The close fit pairs without issues with tactical, hunting or hiking trousers, without creating folds that cause chafing.
  • Available in 7 sizes from XS to 3XL, with a waist circumference ranging from 67 cm to 96 cm and a total length from 106 cm to 113 cm.
