How the layering system works

The first layer draws sweat away from the skin: a dry layer insulates, a wet one chills. The second layer retains heat, the third blocks wind and rain.

Synthetic fibres dry quickly; wool holds fewer odours and keeps you warm even when damp. Over everything, a softshell or waterproof jacket.
