The Tropen is Carinthia's summer sleeping bag designed for operations in tropical and subtropical environments, where the main challenge is not cold but humidity. The single-layer construction with a Shelltrans outer shell that floats free from the inner structure ensures high vapour permeability — a critical factor on hot, muggy nights.
The key construction detail lies in how the Shelltrans shell is mounted: it rests freely over the inner structure without through-stitching, so when the temperature drops or mist rolls in it adds an insulating air layer without creating thermal bridges. This is a deliberate trade-off: anyone needing warmth in all conditions will require a winter bag; those operating in hot climates gain breathability and low weight here, with enough thermal reserve for the cooler nights typical of tropical regions.
The two-way zip allows the foot end to be opened for ventilation without getting out of the bag — a practical choice during watch rotations or short rest periods. The hood incorporates a mosquito net folded into the front baffle, secured with press studs and closable around the head with a thin zip designed not to jam or scratch. The advantage is insect protection without the added heat of a dense fabric. The bag compresses to an extremely small volume in the dedicated compression sack included, which has a bottom loop for carrying by hand.
