Helikon-Tex Boonie Hat MK2 Rip-Stop

The Boonie Hat MK2 is Helikon-Tex's field hat in quick-drying rip-stop fabric, a direct evolution of the military «Aussie hat». Weighing 124 g and made from 50% polyester, 48% cotton and 2% elastane at 220 g/m², it sits in the lightweight headwear segment designed for extended outdoor use, available in sizes S (circumference 55 cm), M (57 cm), L (59 cm) and XL (61 cm).

The cotton-polyester-elastane blend delivers a pressure-free fit and allows the hat to be folded and pocketed without permanent deformation. Cotton retains less dry heat than pure synthetics but absorbs a small amount of moisture: those who sweat heavily in humid conditions will find the fabric stays cooler than all-polyester versions, at the cost of slightly slower drying compared to 100% microfibre. The ventilation eyelets in the crown increase airflow around the head, partly compensating for this behaviour.

The brim is adjustable via a drawcord with a plastic stopper, useful in windy conditions or for attaching the hat to Helikon-Tex's RAID blouse through the dedicated loop. The contrast-colour inner lining serves as a basic visual emergency signal without requiring additional equipment. Two hook-and-loop panels — one front, one rear — allow identification or unit patches to be attached, though they do not hold patches as securely as a rigid plastic-backed panel: retention is adequate in normal use but less reliable under prolonged mechanical stress.
