The open top is the detail worth thinking through: it allows the fastest possible magazine draw with no retention devices to disengage and no resistance on extraction, and reloading a spent magazine is equally straightforward. In return, it does not offer the active retention of a pouch with a snap closure or flap: on very broken ground or in inverted positions, the magazine is held by fabric friction alone. For those who prioritise access speed and operate in environments where an upright stance is the norm, this trade-off is generally acceptable.
