How to choose

With a sleeping bag, the comfort temperature is what matters, not the extreme rating: it's the temperature at which you'll actually sleep comfortably. Synthetic insulation keeps you warm even when wet; down weighs less for the same warmth.

The sleeping mat matters as much as the bag, because cold comes up from the ground. A tarp or bivy bag offers protection without the weight of a tent.
