Why shift the weight to the waist

A holster, spare magazines and pouches on the belt keep the torso clear: they pair with a plate carrier without overlapping and remain accessible when seated or in a vehicle.

A harness distributes the weight across the shoulders when the belt is heavily loaded, at the cost of extra bulk. On a padded battle belt, rigidity matters: it must support a holster without rotating.
