The Windrunner is an ultralight windproof jacket from Helikon-Tex made in WindPack Nylon fabric, designed for those who spend long hours outdoors and cannot afford to carry unnecessary weight. Its main strength is extreme packability: it folds into its own inner pocket and compresses to the size of a fist, ready to slip into a pack or cargo pocket without taking up space.
WindPack Nylon blocks wind and dries quickly after light rain or perspiration, thanks to a DWR (Durable Water Repellency) finish that causes water to bead and run off the surface. It is worth being clear about what this means: the finish makes the garment water-repellent, not waterproof. It handles drizzle and splashes, but it is not a substitute for a waterproof membrane in sustained rainfall. In return, the low weight and breathability provided by the mesh underarm vents make it wearable even during intense effort, where a waterproof membrane would feel stifling. This is the defining trade-off of a windshirt: you gain in mobility, weight savings and thermal management, and you give something up in heavy-rain protection.
The construction is designed to retain heat when needed: the hem is adjustable via drawcord, the cuffs are elasticated, and the hood is also adjustable, reducing heat-loss points when the wind picks up. Reinforced elbows protect the highest-wear areas during fieldwork or shooting positions. A mesh arm pocket adds a quick-access point for small items without opening the jacket.
