The Windrunner is an ultralight windproof jacket from Helikon-Tex, made in WindPack nylon with a DWR (Durable Water Repellency) finish, designed for anyone moving through open terrain who needs compact wind protection always within reach. It packs into its own internal pocket (selfpack system) down to a pocketable bundle, ready to stow in a pack or cargo pocket without taking up meaningful space.
WindPack Nylon is lightweight, fast-drying and water-repellent: it sheds light spray and blocks wind, but this is not a waterproof jacket — anyone needing protection in heavy, sustained rain should look at a dedicated outer shell. On the other side of that trade-off, mesh underarm vents dump heat during high-output activity, addressing the classic windshell problem: keeping wind out without cooking the wearer. The elbows are reinforced to handle abrasion in shooting positions or extended work on the ground.
The hood adjusts to fit over a bare head or a hat, elastic cuffs seal the wrists without buttons to fumble in gloves, and the drawcord at the hem reduces cold bridging when the jacket is worn as a mid-layer over insulation such as the Helikon-Tex Alpha Hoodie. A mesh arm pocket adds quick access for small items without adding to overall weight.
Key points
- Packs into its own internal pocket (selfpack): takes up minimal space in a cargo pocket or pack, ready to wear in seconds.
- DWR finish sheds light spray and moisture; WindPack nylon dries quickly after exposure to rain or sweat.
- Mesh underarm vents release heat during high-intensity movement, preventing the overheating common with closed shells.
- Reinforced elbows hold up in extended prone positions without restricting arm movement.
- Elastic cuffs and hem drawcord seal the jacket to the body — useful as a light outer layer during temperature swings at altitude or in a hide.
- Water-repellent but not waterproof: the right choice for aerobic activity in variable conditions, not for prolonged exposure to driving rain.
