Retention is handled by an adjustable bungee cord on each compartment: the advantage is that drawing and re-inserting a magazine is immediate, with no extra steps. The trade-off, worth considering carefully, is that during intense dynamic activity or in inverted positions the magazine is held less securely than it would be with a snap retention or friction retention system. For those who work primarily upright or on the range, the gain in speed more than outweighs the compromise.
