Gerber

The Gerber LMF II Infantry is a fixed-blade survival knife with a 123 mm 420HC steel blade and an overall length of 269 mm. Developed in collaboration with Jeff Freeman, a former military serviceman, to give aircraft crews a tool capable of cutting through the fuselage of a downed aircraft, it has remained in production because those same characteristics make it useful in any critical field situation.

The choice of 420HC is a deliberate trade-off: it offers good edge retention and better corrosion resistance than high-carbon steels, at the cost of slightly lower hardness. Those who need to spend hours cutting cordage or vegetation in wet conditions will find this balance worthwhile; those who need maximum edge retention for prolonged work on hard materials will prefer harder steels. The drop point geometry with a partially serrated edge allows both pull cuts on synthetic fibres and carving work with the plain section.

The most significant design detail is the intentional break between the tang and the pommel: this electrically isolates the handle from the blade, protecting against live wires encountered during egress from an aircraft, while also absorbing impacts when the pommel is used as a striking tool. The ballistic nylon sheath with flame-retardant coating includes an integrated sharpener and is MOLLE compatible. Weight with sheath is 688 g; without sheath 331 g.

Key features

  • The break between tang and pommel electrically isolates the hand from the blade, reducing risk in the presence of live wiring.
  • The partially serrated section speeds up cutting of cordage and seatbelts without sacrificing the precision of the plain edge.
  • The reinforced rear pommel allows the knife to be used as a striking tool without transmitting the impact to the handle.
  • The MOLLE sheath with integrated sharpener lets you carry the knife on a vest or belt and restore the edge without additional tools.
  • Made in USA construction with limited lifetime warranty.
