The Leatherman Surge is Leatherman's flagship multi-tool for those who need a rugged, fully featured instrument for daily carry in the field, hunting, or on duty. Closed it measures 11.5 cm and weighs 335 g: working-tool dimensions, not keychain dimensions.

Both the needle-nose and standard pliers are among the largest Leatherman produces, and the wire cutters — replaceable in the field without any tools — come in three versions: regular wire, hard wire, and braided wire. The practical benefit is that when the blades wear out, you replace only them, not the entire tool. The integrated crimper and wire stripper round out a set that also suits those working on electrical systems or wired equipment.

All primary tools are accessible from the outside with the tool closed: you do not need to open the handle to reach the 7.87 cm 420HC straight blade, the serrated blade, the spring-action scissors, or the saw. This reduces reaction times compared to multi-tools with only internal implements, but it does result in a thicker body than more compact models. The hard-anodized finish on the body keeps the black colour stable over time even with heavy use. The Surge also includes two slots for interchangeable inserts, compatible with standard quarter-inch bits, extending its versatility further without adding permanent bulk.
