The Boonie Hat MK2 is Helikon-Tex's field hat designed for extended outdoor use in varying conditions. Built from elastane-blend rip-stop fabric, it weighs 124 g and folds down to fit in a side pocket without losing its shape when put back on. The wide brim shields the neck and face from sun even at midday.
The fabric combines 50% polyester, 48% cotton and 2% elastane at 220 g/m²: more substantial than a purely synthetic hat, so more comfortable against the forehead, yet breathable enough to dry quickly after rain or a demanding session. Ventilation grommets around the crown promote airflow during static situations, where the hat tends to trap more heat than an open cap. The trade-off to consider: the full brim offers better sun protection than a cap, but adds to your silhouette and may interfere with the quick fitting of bulky hearing protection or headsets.
The inner panel in a contrasting colour is intended for emergency signalling: simply fold back the brim or remove the hat to expose a surface visible at distance. Two velcro panels on the front and rear brim allow identification or unit patches to be attached. The chin cord adjusts with a plastic lock and keeps the hat in place in strong wind; a dedicated loop lets you clip it to the Helikon-Tex RAID blouse when it is not on your head.
