The Baofeng UV-K61 is a tri-band handheld transceiver that transmits and receives on VHF (136–174 MHz and 220–260 MHz) and UHF (400–480 MHz), with additional AM receive coverage on the aeronautical band (108–136 MHz), commercial FM (65–108 MHz) and NOAA weather channels. At 64x121x35 mm and 270 g including the battery, it fits in a pocket or clips to a belt without getting in the way. The 2600 mAh, 7.4 V lithium-ion battery charges via USB-C, meaning any standard smartphone charger will do — no proprietary power supplies or dedicated adapters needed. Output power is selectable between low (up to 1 W) and high (4–5 W), letting you match range to operating conditions and save battery life when distance allows. The antenna connector is SMA male, a widely used standard that makes swapping to aftermarket antennas straightforward; the side audio connector is compatible with the 2-pin Kenwood format, giving access to a broad range of third-party earpieces, remote microphones and PTT accessories.

The 999-channel memory lets you store all regularly used frequencies by name — repeaters, PMR446 channels, shared VHF/UHF frequencies and marine channels — without having to re-enter them each session. The radio comes pre-programmed with 16 PMR channels, 9 shared UHF channels and 5 VHF channels, ready to use out of the box. The VOX function enables hands-free transmission, useful with an earpiece when your hands are occupied. It is worth noting that transmitting on VHF and UHF frequencies outside the licence-free PMR bands requires an operator licence: the UV-K61 is technically capable of covering a wide range, but transmission must comply with the regulations in force in the country of use.
